Stephen Cunnane
Stephen Cunnane, PhD, is a distinguished researcher and professor known for his work in nutrition, brain energy metabolism, and cognitive functions during aging. He obtained his PhD in Physiology from McGill University in 1980. This was followed by post-doctoral research focused on nutrition and brain development in Aberdeen, London, and Nova Scotia.
Dr. Cunnane’s research primarily utilizes brain imaging techniques (such as PET and MRI) to study the link between nutrition, changing brain fuel metabolism, and cognitive function during aging. He is a world expert on the role of ketones as an alternative brain fuel, particularly in the context of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment.
Dr. Cunnane and his team were the first to demonstrate that ketones can partially correct the brain energy deficit in older people at risk of AD, leading to the concept of ‘brain energy rescue’ by ketones. His research also covers the role of omega-3 fatty acids in brain development and health.
